Communicate for a healthy planet
Achieving your energy goal through design is a great experience.
On a recent project I felt that satisfying experience. Excited, I had created a Microsoft Excel list of all the steps I went through to achieve this energy goal. I took that around and started sharing my experience with a few of my colleagues. People digged it, but it wasn’t quite captivating to many.
Those who asked many questions and delve deep into the analysis seemed to enjoy the Microsoft Excel rendition of the Energy Story. For the casual onlookers, it was rather dry and many did say the Excel version lacked life!
I turned to Sankey Diagrams. I created one diagram per design iteration that we went through during the schematic design. The goal was to design an elementary school with energy consumption not to exceed 30 kBtu/sf/yr.
The average elementary school’s energy consumption in the same zip code from Energy Star Target Finder was 50 kBtu/sf/yr.
Here’s the story – the Energy Story!
